Along the way:
Driving from Ashdod port eastbound, ascending from the sea level to the hills of Israel’s low land, around 250 meters (820 feet) above sea level, you’ll be taken via Ha’ela Valley, the location of the famous battle between David and Goliath on your way to your adventure above and underground.
What you see:
♦ Maresha: Believed to be the place where Herods the Great was born, Maresha was one of the important cities in this area which was known in the Roman period as Edomea. Your visit to this unique archeology site will be highlighted by a guided walk through the amazing caves, carved by men that have been used as cistern, animal pens, burial grounds Columbarium (pigeon housing) and for olive oil production with the remarkable ancient olive press. Visit the Sidonian Burial Cave that was beautifully restored and boasts interior decorative paint.
♦ Beit Guvrin: Referred to by Josephus Flavius as one of the most important towns taken by the Romans in 68 CE, this once small village grew in importance. Visit the ruins of this great city including the Amphitheatre and the Crusaders’ church. Finally, enter the enormous bell caves. Dug between the 7th and 10th centuries, these specious caves might remind you of a cathedral or large concert hall, complete with superior acoustics
